3M Thermally Conductive Tape is a double-sided tape using a ceramic-filled acrylic adhesive that provides both heat transfer and a mechanical bond between components and heat sinks. It replaces clips, screws and thermal grease all at once, enabling thinner, more compact designs and a clean, fast assembly process with no cure time.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Thermal conductivity | 0.6–1.0 W/m·K |
| Thickness | 0.13–0.5 mm |
| Thermal impedance | 0.5–1.5 °C·cm²/W |
| 90° peel adhesion on aluminum | 12 N/25 mm |
| Breakdown voltage | 5 kV |
Surfaces must be flat, clean and free of oil and grease; wipe with isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry. Press or roll down evenly at about 100–200 kPa for a few seconds to eliminate air bubbles, since air voids sharply increase thermal resistance. The tape is suited to small gaps and flat surfaces; for warped surfaces or large gaps, choose a soft thermal gap pad instead.
Choose the thinnest tape that still compensates for surface flatness, since thermal resistance increases almost in direct proportion to adhesive thickness.
