Windshield adhesives: requirements and choices

Polyurethane windshield adhesives require high tensile strength, an appropriate elastic modulus and a short safe drive-away time. This article summarizes the key requirements and how to choose an adhesive for assembly lines as well as glass replacement shops.

A windshield does more than keep out the wind. On modern vehicles, the glass contributes to the torsional stiffness of the body, serves as a backstop for the passenger airbag when it deploys and supports the roof in a rollover. The adhesive bead is therefore a safety component, not merely a sealing material.

Technical requirements for windshield adhesives

  • Tensile strength above 6 MPa and elongation above 300%.
  • An appropriate elastic modulus: high modulus increases body stiffness, while low modulus suits vehicles with antennas integrated into the glass.
  • High volume resistivity so as not to interfere with antenna signals on the glass.
  • Resistance to UV and damp heat throughout the vehicle's life.

Safe drive-away time

This is the minimum time after glass installation for the adhesive to become strong enough to withstand crash loads according to safety standards. Conventional one-part moisture-curing adhesives need from 1 to several hours depending on temperature and humidity. Two-part or heated adhesives can shorten this to under 30 minutes.

2K PU15–30 minutesLittle dependence on humidityHigh-speed assembly

Correct glass installation procedure

  1. Trim the old adhesive bead down to 1–2 mm to serve as a bonding base.
  2. Clean the glass and frame, and apply primer to the black ceramic frit on the glass and to any paint scratches.
  3. Apply a continuous, unbroken triangular bead 10–12 mm high.
  4. Set the glass, press evenly and secure it with tape during the waiting time.

Working time after applying the adhesive is usually 10 to 20 minutes, and the glass must be set before a skin forms on the bead to ensure proper adhesion.

In hot and humid conditions such as northern Vietnam in summer, moisture-curing adhesives can skin over faster, shortening working time. Conversely, on dry winter days, the safe drive-away time is longer than the standard specification. Technicians should consult the manufacturer's time charts by temperature and humidity and tell customers exactly when the vehicle can be driven.
