Slot liners, wedges and phase insulation in electric motors; layer and end-turn insulation in dry-type transformers and generators
Thickness 0.05–0.76 mm / Dielectric strength 20–30 kV/mm / Class H 180 °C, up to 220 °C / Density 0.7–1.1 g/cm³
Sealed packaging, dry place, keep from moisture before use
DuPont Nomex Insulating Paper is an aramid paper calendered at high temperature, combining high dielectric strength with Class H thermal performance. The material retains its mechanical and electrical properties through years of continuous operation at elevated temperatures, making it a widely used standard in the manufacture and rewinding of motors and dry-type transformers.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Thickness | 0.05–0.76 mm |
| Dielectric strength | 20–30 kV/mm |
| Thermal class | H (180 °C), operating up to 220 °C |
| Density | 0.7–1.1 g/cm³ |
| Tensile strength (MD) | approx. 100 N/cm at 0.25 mm |
Aramid paper absorbs moisture from the air, which can reduce dielectric strength; for high-voltage equipment, dry at 105–120 °C before varnish impregnation. When folding edges or forming slots, use tooling with a bend radius suited to the paper thickness. Store rolls or sheets flat and avoid heavy loads that could cause deformation.
For motor rewinding, 0.18–0.25 mm paper in medium-sized stator slots usually offers a good balance between dielectric strength and slot fill.
