Product description

Shin-Etsu KBM Series Silane is a family of methoxy-functional silane coupling agents that act as a chemical bridge between inorganic surfaces such as glass, metals and mineral fillers and organic polymers. In small amounts, silanes significantly improve the adhesion, mechanical properties and moisture resistance of composites, adhesives and coatings.

Typical Applications

  • Surface treatment of glass fiber in FRP composites and reinforced plastics
  • Treatment of silica, talc and aluminum hydroxide fillers for rubber and plastics
  • Adhesion-promoting additive for epoxy, polyurethane and silicone adhesives
  • Primer component for glass and metal before bonding or painting
  • Resin modification and cross-linking of PE and acrylic resins

Benefits

  1. Increases adhesion between the resin matrix and inorganic surfaces
  2. Retains composite mechanical properties after water immersion or hot-humid exposure
  3. Improves filler dispersion and lowers compound viscosity
  4. Multiple functional groups to match the resin system

Key Specifications

Specific gravity (25 °C)1.0–1.1
Dosage for filler treatment0.5–2 wt%
Dosage as adhesive additive0.5–1 wt%
pH of hydrolysis solution4–5

Application Notes

Select the functional group to suit the resin matrix: epoxy silane for epoxy and polyurethane, amino silane for phenolic and polyamide, vinyl silane for polyolefins, and methacryloxy silane for unsaturated polyester and acrylics. Use hydrolyzed solutions within the same day. Silanes release methanol on hydrolysis, so handle in a ventilated area and wear gloves and safety glasses.

Adding silane directly to the resin mix (integral blend) is simpler than pretreating the filler, but pretreatment usually delivers better results at the same dosage.
